New connectivity reshaping the financial hub's future landscape.
Get DetailsThe Union Cabinet has approved a 3.33-kilometre extension of the North-South corridor from GIFT City to Shahpur, which will include three elevated stations and is scheduled to be completed in approximately four years. The estimated cost of the project is Rs. 1,067.35 crore. This decision, announced in February 2026, marks a pivotal moment for the region's urban infrastructure and real estate landscape.
The extension itself carries profound implications for how professionals, families, and businesses will connect within and beyond the GIFT City corridor. The approved stations are GIFT City House, Gujarat Biotechnology University, and Shahpur. Each station represents a distinct node of opportunity—from the heart of the financial district to emerging educational and commercial zones. This corridor will strengthen connectivity between Ahmedabad and GIFT region, with major multinational companies, educational institutions, and commercial centers located along the proposed route expected to directly benefit.
For homebuyers and investors, the numbers paint an optimistic picture. The extended corridor is expected to benefit approximately 23,702 passengers in 2029 and approximately 58,059 passengers in 2041. What this means in practical terms is straightforward: as the metro opens, the area transitions from specialized employment housing into a genuine residential market. Metro rail connectivity is the single most impactful project for residential ROI, significantly enhancing accessibility and making residential units desirable for professionals across Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad, dramatically reducing vacancy rates and driving rental premiums.
The broader context underscores why this extension matters. Currently, the Gujarat Metro's 68.28-km Ahmedabad Metro Phase-I and Phase-II, with total 53 stations have been successfully made operational since September 2022 and January 2026, with daily ridership of approximately 1,60,000. The extension will naturally feed into this established network, creating seamless interchange opportunities and multiplying the catchment area for residential and commercial activity.
The project is expected to create approximately 1,000 jobs during construction and about 250 posts in operations and maintenance in the post-construction phase, with additional indirect employment arising from related activities. Beyond the construction phase, the extension opens doors for hospitality, retail, and service sectors along the corridor. What emerges is not merely a transit line, but an economic catalyst reshaping how the region develops over the next five to ten years.
